The company was founded in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli in Milan (Italty), and Its business expanded in the Europe in the very early 19th century, opening several plants in places like England and Spain for tire manufacturing.

It was listed at the Milan Stock Exchange in 1922, and thereafter, was listed at New York Stock Exchange. The commitment in manufacturing tires for racing allows Pirelli to innovate for sport tyres with better tread to avoid damages at high speed.

While Pirelli kept opening up plants due to expansion, a tyre company, Veith Gummiwerke AG was acquired by Pirelli in 1963. Throughout the journey, several famous model are developed, such as Cintuarto and several tyre companies were also acquired along the way for Pirelli expansion, except that Pirelli had failed to procure Continental AG.
In 2000, Pirelli sold their terrestrial systems to Cisco, and optical component business to Corning for reorganization. In 2004, a joint venture agreement was signed with Continental AG to produce steelcords in Romania. Then in 2005, Pirelli sold its cables and energy systems and telecommunications to Goldman Sachs, and also opening the first tyre plant in Shandong province, China.

Cintuarto P7 was introduced based on the research to develop tyre energy efficiency (green philosophy). In 2010, Pirelli transformed into "pure tyre company" by spinning off with other business sectors. Pirelli became the exclusive tire supplier for Formula 1™ since 2011.
