Tyre DOT Decoder

The US Department of Transportation established a requirement in January 1971 for a tire identification number (TIN) that must be labeled on one sidewall of each tire that is newly manufactured or retreaded. (to be sold in the U.S market)
The length of the TIN was standardized to 13 symbols for new tires and 7 symbols for retreaded tires in April 2015.

Locate the DOT code

If you cannot find the text "DOT" at the sidewall, it will be located on the inside sidewall. The first two digits of the TIN indicate the manufacturer’s plant code, while the remaining digits indicate the tire size and date of manufacture.

Check the manufacturing date

The last four digits represent the week and year of manufacture. For example, '2319' means the 23rd week of 2019.

Even though the code is mandated by the US Department of transport, it is used worldwide. Therefore the DOT code applies to all tires manufacturered for use on public roads, regardless of the market they are sold in. If the DOT code is not imprinted on the sidewall, it does not mean the tire is not authorized to be sold or a counterfeited product. It just mean the batch of tire is not sold to the market that requires the DOT by law.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the maximum age for a tire?
10 years maximum since production of the tire. Suggest to get inspected by technician from 6 years onwards to determine the tire usability.

According to various factory recommendation such as Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, advise drivers to get your tire replaced 10 years starting from the prodction of the tire.

2. How old should my new tires be?
It depends on driver usage, and the brand new tyre storage condition.

According to the experiment report made by U.S. NHTSA department, tire aging still occurs even if it was not used (but at a slow rate, depending on storage condition).

It is obvious that the fresher the better. However, with a lower price sold for older brand new tire, and driver consumption rate, sometimes older brand new tire might be more value worth to you.

3. How can I tell if my tires have been recalled using the DOT code?
Click here to direct yourself to NHTSA website, search your tire brand at the tire section and a list of records may appear, including the number of cases for recall, investigations, complaints.
Click on the number will direct you to another site whereas you can find more detail on each of the case, with DOT code or production date (which also relate to DOT).

Even if you are not in U.S, you may find your tire DOT appear on NHTSA as a batch of tires are produced at the same time, and it was distributed throughout world. If it happens, you may need to enquire your local authority or tire agent regarding the issue happened.

For those in Hong Kong, DOT code may not printed. Hence you can't find out if your tires needs recalled.
