Continental-Caoutchouc-und Gutta-Percha Compagnie was founded in Hanover, Germany, in Oct, 1871, as
a joint stock company, manufacturing soft rubber products, rubberized fabrics, and solid tires for
carriages and bicycles.
In 1892, continental started manufacture penumatic tires for bicycles, and after 6 years, it started
automobile pneumatic tires without tread patterns, and only in 1904 Continental started the automobile
tire with patterned tread. The first German airship LZ1 utilized the Continental ballon material for sealing.
Detachable rim was invented by continental for sedans in an attempt to save time and effort for changing a tire.
Going through multiple events in the years, and in year of 1928 - 1929, Continental merged with other companies of the
rubber industry to form continental. Joined multiple events including car racing, and business expansion and products expansion
throughout the years, continental took over the tire operations of the Austrian company - Semperit in 1985, and acquired
North American tire manufacturer General Tire, Inc , which was later renamed as continental Tire North America.
To expand in China and Asia, continental invested in Shanghai to open up the new Asian headquarters, and research and developement
center.
